Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation, a catalyst for economic growth in 20 counties in southeast and south central Minnesota, has created the Southern Minnesota Equity Fund. The Fund’s mission is to drive economic growth and prosperity for our region by providing financial capital and networks to early stage and start-up companies located in or looking to locate in our geographic region. The Fund looks to partner with other organizations and individual investors to leverage capital and expertise to grow innovative companies who will provide economic opportunities for Southern Minnesota.
Typical investments are made in early-stage companies from any industry, but with an emphasis on medical, new technology, and value-added agriculture. The Fund expects to invest in six to eight companies per year, with a maximum initial investment of up to $100,000.
The review process includes an initial review by SMIF staff, an application reviewed by the Foundation’s Equity Fund Committee, a 20-minute presentation by the company to the Committee, due diligence process led by SMIF staff and assisted by external advisors, recommended approval by SMIF staff to the Fund Committee, and finalization and negotiation of investment terms assisted by legal counsel. So far, SMIF has reviewed six companies for equity investment—choosing to invest in two and continuing due diligence on two others. Companies looking for investors or investors looking to for opportunities can contact SMIF for more information about the Southern Minnesota Equity Fund at 507-455-3215, or visit our website at www.smifoundation.org.
